Description

Description

This volume contains studies that primarily address issues of iconography. From a geographical perspective, areas such as Constantinople, Mount Athos, Thrace, Lemnos, Patras, the Ionian Islands, Epirus, Macedonia, and Thessaly are covered. An analysis of iconographic and stylistic issues is attempted, which is also approached from the viewpoint of the history of ideas, taking into account the historical context within which the artistic movements emerged, the painters were active, and the works of art were created.

The studies collected in this volume chronologically cover the post-Byzantine period of ecclesiastical art, specifically the period from 1453 to 1830, the conventional end of post-Byzantine art. However, some of the studies in this volume extend beyond the 1830 time limit in order to explore the survival of Byzantine visual language in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, following the Revolution of 1821 and the establishment of the New Greek State.
