Description

A man sets off into the night for the airport to pick up a colleague, takes a wrong turn, and his car ends up in the middle of nowhere, in the Chilean countryside. Walking through the rain, he arrives dripping at the only house with its lights on. And when they open the door for him, he finds himself in front of something unexpected...

Thus begins an unintended escape from everyday life that leads to an anachronistic, unknown world. The Las Nalkas estate, the bosses and their children, fishermen, robbers, and old men who guard secrets until they die, the rich and the poor, enormous contrasts, and a countryside that keeps its mythology alive...

Six stories stemming from the rich oral tradition of Chile are woven together into a strange myth that flows fluidly, without restrictions, but with a unique meaning. A dreamlike, unpredictable book, where the only certainty is death, which, like the rain, will always come.

A small excerpt from the book:

I got out of the car despite the rain. Was there a gas station somewhere here in the middle of nowhere? The walk back to the one on the highway could take me two hours if the dogs didn’t get me first. With no action plan in place, I walked in the opposite direction, toward the coast, not bothering to lock the car.

I didn’t even care to park it off the side of the road to leave room for the unlikely event that another lost vehicle might pass by. All I could hear was the rain and my footsteps, and occasionally the song of a bird that couldn’t find its nest. I felt an overwhelming need to be somewhere else, to have another past and another future, to be someone else, someone more, something more. And above all, I didn’t want to keep getting wet.

Incredibly easy-to-read book, written in a very interesting pattern. It consists of six stories, which are short and connected through the characters and their actions, as well as by the space and time in which the story is narrated. Each story doesn't grab you immediately from the start, but gradually. I read it almost in one night.

Very interesting book, I recommend it 100%, I finished it in one day!
Very interesting writing style, it keeps your interest by giving you different p.o.v. in each chapter, which one complements information for the previous one and leaves big mysteries that only you can decide what you want them to mean or what could have happened.
    Incredible author and incredible translation!
It is slightly confusing how the character's thoughts about the past intertwine with the narration of the present, but other than that, very nice!
