“Beloved little head,” he said. “With the red untamed hair, which has now become short, enigmatic, and black. What on earth have you been doing these past four years in Europe, while I was pretending to be the puffed-up dandy hero of the war in Oak Park, Illinois?”

“I was traveling – here and there.”

“In Italy?”

“All over Europe.”

“All over Europe?” Something like admiration, maybe mixed with a little jealousy, passed over his gaze. “The beloved little head must have ignited many fires with those big green eyes. Great painters and great writers must have certainly fallen in love with you.” Teresa smiled faintly.
