The event of the Dormition or Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos has inspired not only enlightened great hymnographers and iconographers, but also many holy Fathers of our Church, who dedicated to it either special homilies or excerpts - references. After all, it could not have been otherwise.
In the most revered face of the Theotokos, "the boundaries of nature are overcome" in many stages of her life: Being a Virgin, she gave birth to Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Holy Trinity. She remained a Virgin before, during, and after His birth. She is ever-virgin. And when, as a human, she died, then "the boundaries of nature were also overcome," since "tomb and death" did not hold her on earth, because "as the Mother of Life, she was transferred to life, she who housed the ever-virgin in her womb."
"Death the Mother of Life accepts, and placed in a tomb, after the third day she splendidly rises to the ages, reigning with her Son and requesting the remission of our sins" (Saint Mark the Eugenic).
And while in Gethsemane the "Apostles from the ends" of the earth gathered and "buried" the body of the Theotokos, her Son and God "received her spirit," and thereafter the Orthodox Christians "rejoice" for her earthly death, which has become, however, a means and vehicle for connecting the earthly with the heavenly, and an unwavering hope of protection. For the departed Theotokos "intercedes for us day and night."
