“Mother Courage and Her Children” is considered the most important play by Bertolt Brecht. This work is not just a simple anti-war drama, but an anti-capitalist lesson, as it aims to show that the major profits from wars are not made by the little people.
Anna Fierling, which is the real name of the play's heroine, as a wandering trader, fearlessly drives her covered wagon into the battlefields of the Thirty Years' War, while simultaneously trying to care for her three children.
A venture doomed to failure: the war costs all three children their lives. Mother Courage learns nothing from this: alone and poor, she continues to drag herself through the battlefields, trading at the end of the play.
The little people can never become the winners of the war; this could be the moral of the story, as a moral lesson of the play written by Brecht during his exile in Sweden in 1939.
