Kikuyu grass seed (Pennisetum clandestinum) grows quickly in warm climates and forms a dense lawn through stolons and rhizomes. It is tolerant of heat, drought, moderate salinity and heavy use, while its root system helps hold the soil in place and limit erosion. During the colder months, growth slows and the grass may temporarily turn yellow.
Sow in spring or autumn. For a new lawn, use 10–15 g/m²; for overseeding, use 5–10 g/m². After sowing, water frequently and lightly until germination and establishment; thereafter, water less often but deeply. Maintain a mowing height of 2.5–5 cm. During periods of vigorous growth, apply nitrogen fertiliser 3–5 times per year.
