The Penguin Readers series is an ELT graded readers series for learners of English as a foreign language. With simplified text, illustrations, and language learning exercises, the printed edition also includes instructions for accessing online support material.

In the Penguin Readers editions, Roald Dahl's stories have been adapted to CEFR A1 to A2+ levels, in four levels. Each book is also measured with Lexile. The readers include illustrated new words, language activities, and fun games between chapters, encouraging students and teachers to organize learning and make real progress. Each book also includes projects and discussions.

The Witches, a Level 4 reader, is A2+ in the CEFR framework. The text consists of sentences with up to three clauses, introducing more complex uses of the present perfect simple, passive voice, phrasal verbs, and simple relative clauses. It is well supported by illustrations, which appear regularly.
