Undoubtedly, the basic sciences, such as Physics, form the foundation of the cognitive structure of Medicine. It is clear that the physical principles governing the functions of the human body, as well as the applications of Physics for the discovery, development, and optimization of various diagnostic and therapeutic methods and techniques, constitute the basis for understanding and advancing the field of Medical Science.
However, it is rarely the case that these obvious facts are immediately understood by some locally, who express the opposing view of the "usefulness" of the Basic Sciences within an ever-increasing body of knowledge that must be acquired during undergraduate studies.
This criticism has been addressed, many years ago, by the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer with his quote: "Whoever loses the first buttonhole will never manage to button up." Additionally, those who, many years later after their general studies, dive back into the depths of Medical Physics to understand and solve daily problems of medical practices respond to this critique daily. This textbook was created to fill a bibliographic gap.
Its aim is neither an exhaustive study of physical phenomena and principles nor an in-depth study of the technology of modern diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. It aims to document the latter from a Physics perspective, so that in addition to understanding them, the reader acquires the necessary background for integrating the rapid developments that continuously arise from the evolution of Medicine and technology.
