Description

Vendetta crimes that preoccupied Greek public opinion from 1920 until the end of the 20th century. Real vendetta cases that took place in Crete, Mani, and the rest of Greece, many of which had shocked the entire nation. The book begins with a brief history of vendetta from antiquity to the modern era, where the roots of the custom of self-justice are traced. It examines how the unwritten law of blood began in Crete, explains with examples the Cretan concept of "sasmos," and discusses "gdikiomos" and "xevgaltides" in Mani. Finally, other countries and regions where vendetta flourished are mentioned: Cyprus, Italy, Albania, Serbia, Spain, Corsica, etc. "I wrote this book to leave a legacy for future generations about the crimes of vendetta and to highlight the barbarity of this custom, which once dominated many regions of Greece, but mainly in Crete and Mani. In Mani, everything indicates that this inhumane tradition, which wiped out families, deserted entire villages, and sent countless victims to the grave, has disappeared for good, as it has in the rest of Greece. In contrast, in Crete, unfortunately, it has not disappeared and will not disappear unless a government dares to take measures to remove all weapons from homes in Crete, especially in mountainous areas, and to punish those who carry weapons exemplarily. Only then will there be hope to stop the bloodshed." P.S.

In Mani, everything indicates that this inhumane tradition, which wiped out families, deserted entire villages, and sent countless victims to the grave, has definitively disappeared, as it has in the rest of Greece.
