The 1st Gymnasium of Arta is the oldest and most historic secondary school in the city.
The presentation of the information related to the establishment and operation of the 1st Gymnasium of Arta, which remains a vibrant and creative institution for 132 continuous years, sheds light not only on the educational needs, but also on the new social, economic, and political conditions of the historical journey of a city, adding another page to the history of education.
Through the excerpts from the archival material, the life and operation of the school unfold from its beginnings until the mid-20th century.
We live together with the teachers and their students, the particularly strict rules of behavior, the exemplary teachings, and the punishments that were imposed. The names of the first gymnasium directors, as well as several teachers of the time, pass in front of us, and special mention is made of important graduates of the school.
At the same time, through the primary material (drawings, images, testimonies), significant elements are revealed about the history not only of the school, but also of Arta, as well as, why hide it, the artistic and literary journey of our country.
This study was based on research conducted at the General State Archives (GSA) of Arta, as well as on books referring to the history of education and schools. Thus, we get an image of education in the previous century and the historical-social changes that affected the institution of the school.
The book by Elpidophoros Inzembelis is a historical chronicle of the 1st Gymnasium of Arta, which reflects the uniqueness of the society of Arta and, consequently, the wider area.
The book also includes an appendix with unpublished photographs of the school's activities, provided by former students who willingly contributed material from their personal archives.
