The beautiful Nell is a thirteen-year-old orphan who lives with her grandfather in an antique shop in London. Worried about her future, the old man secretly gambles at night to secure her an inheritance, but ultimately loses everything he has and is evicted from the shop by the evil fat man and moneylender Daniel Quilp, suffering from a mental breakdown as a result. Forced to leave the city, the young girl takes on the responsibility of caring for her grandfather and protecting herself from the ruthless thugs pursuing them.
"The Old Curiosity Shop" is Dickens' fourth novel, initially published in installments in the magazine Master Humphrey’s Clock between 1840 and 1841. It was a great success upon its release and is still considered one of the author's most important works, featuring one of his most beloved and unforgettable heroines.
