German Romantic poetry is both fluid and shaped, full of song: the poems are often inherently lyrical, and many of them inspired some of the best-known musical compositions of the nineteenth century. In this collection, German Romantic poets confront the greatest moments and challenges of life - love, loss, death - and produce beautiful, and sometimes witty works in response. The admiration for nature, particularly the dramatic forests that cover large areas of Germany, is also prominent in their works. Characters from myth and tradition also appear, most famously Lorelei, an enchanting woman associated with the Rhine River who appears in several poems in this volume. Gathered here are favorites such as Goethe's 'Erl King', Eichendorff's 'Night of the Moon', Heine's 'In May, the magic month of May', along with works by some of the best-known female writers of the time, Sophie Mereau, Karoline von Günderrode, and Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. The works have been recreated in English verse by a range of poets and scholars.
