It is true that the artillery is known as the "king of battle." During World War II, the United States used self-propelled guns, including those based on M4 Sherman tank chassis. After 1945, light and medium self-propelled guns were developed, based on the M24 Chaffee, M41 Walker Bulldog, and Sherman. The initial designs faced problems and self-propelled artillery played only a secondary role in the Korean War. However, by the mid-1960s, the M107 175mm, M109 155mm, and M110 203mm self-propelled guns had entered service and proved their effectiveness during the Vietnam War. The M107 had a relatively short service life but played a significant role with the Israeli Armed Forces. The M109 was used by the United States Army as well as in many NATO countries and participated in many conflicts. The M110 203mm also saw extensive service before being retired in the early 1990s. Despite the advent of rocket artillery, self-propelled artillery will remain one of the main weapon systems of American military force for the coming decades.
