I had the 8a but now, guys, I have the pixel 8 (replacement due to loss) and I can compare them.
So the 8a is the best I've held in my hands after the 4a, even though I've bought the pixel 6, 6a, 7, and now 8. The only downside is that at 500, it's not an easy choice if you can get the 8 for 520€ or 550€.
But if you find it with a 100 euro difference, then yes, it's a very good choice.
The device is essentially the pixel 8 with the following differences:
Design
The size is ideal, although a bit larger than the 8. Nevertheless, it has a smaller screen due to the larger bezels.
The bezels are quite thick, but it didn't negatively affect me coming from the pixel 7.
It takes away that flagship feeling, but come on, guys, you get used to it.
The shape is a bit rounder, making it easier to hold, use with one hand, and fit in your pocket.
The back is plastic but doesn't feel like cheap material. On the contrary, with the matte finish, it resembles more the 8 pro, plus it's more durable ★ and less prone to fingerprints.
Performance:
Having the same chip, it's logical to have similar performance, but for some unknown reason, it's quite a bit faster :). I felt a difference compared to the 7, but now with the 8, I feel like I'm back on the 7 and 6.
Display and sound:
It's an amazing display with fantastic brightness, both automatic and manual. That's why I said that the bezels detract from the flagship experience because it's truly a 2024 flagship display.
The 120hz, of course, makes it extra smooth, and the HDR is spot on.
Speakers, yes, a bit inferior to the 7, but not a huge difference.
Cameras:
The difference from the 5a and back, which had the old classic, widely used Sony sensor, is incredible, and generally, you'll see more natural photos (since it doesn't rely so excessively on HDR processing), and this will be noticeable in night shots and close-up x2 zoom.
Of course, if you see the photos on a large screen (computer), there's a difference between the new sensor used in the pixel 7 and 8. The new sensor is simply better and much larger, especially in the aforementioned night sight, zoom, and night shots without night mode, you'll see the difference.
But for most users, it remains the best option compared to the competition at 450€ and below.
I rate it at the level of the iPhone 13 main sensor ;)
The ultra-wide does not have auto focus, so no macro mode, but still, for some reason, it is often better than the 8 and noticeably wider than the 7.

Yes, it supports most of the "magical" features of the pixel 8 and has the same promise of 7 years of software updates, which means that A) you can keep it longer and
B) you can sell it for more
C) When the time comes for upgrading your device, it gives you the option to wait, you know ;) You won't be left behind or without security while waiting for the price drop.
Software:
We're talking about pixel, so the experience is familiar to fans, useful for developers (you have the privilege of early access for 7 years to take a first look at what's new or to develop your app on the new software).
For the rest of the users, you'll see a simple user interface without the extras from each company. only the basic Google apps that you might already be using on any Android,
It doesn't have amazing options to customize it as you wish, but it also doesn't overwhelm you with endless unnecessary options or apps that you can't delete.
In general, the interface seems "poorer" compared to Galaxy, Xiaomi, etc., but also cleaner. This simplicity makes it a natural choice for someone coming from an iPhone. It's the iPhone of Android in a way.
Charging is slower at 18w and lacks reverse charging.
In conclusion, if you like the way Google envisions how Android should be, want simplicity and some smart features, you'll love it. If the price drops to 400, don't look elsewhere.
Keep in mind that it will officially arrive in Greece soon, opening the doors to the ultimate experience with full support for the AI features it has and those coming. And of course, in trade-in deals that we haven't had until now
