Supplement to the drop test for the determination of nitrite content (NO2). Aquatest NO2- is used for the determination of nitrite content in the range of 0.1-10 mg/l using the colorimetric method.
Nitrites are an intermediate product of the transformation of protein nitrogen and are formed in the first stage of the oxidation of ammonium compounds with the participation of aerobic bacteria. Nitrites are compounds dangerous to the health and life of fish. Already at concentrations above 0.3 mg/l, they become harmful with prolonged exposure, and above 1 mg/l, they are very toxic, above 5 mg/l, they are lethal.
The risk of very high concentrations of nitrite ions arises in conditions of accumulation of protein substances, insufficient oxygenation, and unfavorable bacterial flora. This situation can occur when there are too many fish, excessive feeding, unclean substrate, and dirty filters.
How to prevent nitrite contamination?
- When the nitrite content is 0.5-1 mg/l, half of the water in the aquarium should be replaced.
- Above 1 mg/l almost the entire volume should be changed.
- Intensive aeration, cleaning of filters and substrate.
The set includes: 2 bottles of reagent solutions.
