The PEBBLE series gets its name from the pebbles smoothed by water, and the mug is perhaps the piece where this idea works best. The mug has no handle: it is held with your entire palm, just like you would hold a pebble you have just picked up from the shoreline.
The absence of a handle provides direct contact with the temperature of the beverage — something that in Japanese tea culture is considered part of the experience. It is worth noting that very hot drinks will cause the mug to warm noticeably in the first few minutes.
Each piece is unique, as the enamel creates slight variations in tone and texture from piece to piece. In some, the yōhen phenomenon appears — the unexpected color variation that occurs inside the kiln during firing, giving a slightly 'burnt' appearance. This is not a defect but a signature of handcrafted production. There may also be minor differences in dimensions, weight, and capacity, while the logo may not be clearly visible depending on the enamel's density.
The capacity of the mug reaches 180 ml to the rim, but it comfortably serves 140–150 ml — a proper portion of tea, a cappuccino, or a small filter coffee. It pairs perfectly with the PEBBLE 480 ml teapot, which fills exactly two of these mugs. The saucer, with a diameter of 110 mm, features the same enamel and shape concept.
