In early 1964, photographer Harry Benson received a call from the photo editor of London's Daily Express newspaper, asking him to cover the Beatles' trip to Paris. It was the start of a career that defined Benson's reputation and created some of the most intimate photographs of the Beatles. In Paris, Benson captured the Fab Four during a pillow fight at the George V hotel, a spontaneous moment that defined the spirit of the band—Benson himself has stated that this is the best shot of his career. Later that year, he followed them to their debut in the U.S., documenting their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, an unexpected meeting with Cassius Clay, and the hysteria of New York during Beatlemania. Benson also photographed George Harrison's honeymoon in Barbados, captured the Beatles filming their first movie A Hard Day’s Night, and was present during the now-infamous 1966 tour when John Lennon declared that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus." This pocket edition brings to light the best of Benson's luminous black-and-white Beatles portfolio. Accompanied by quotes and newspapers from the era, an introduction by the photographer himself adds a compelling personal testimony to these iconic images of the greatest band in music history.
