Description

The "peer counseling" or "peer support" is based on the inherent need of humans to offer help or seek help from individuals who share similar experiences, concerns, and difficulties. Especially in the field of education, the psychological support of children by their classmates or of students by their peers proves to be immensely beneficial: it serves as an effective preventive measure that prevents simple, everyday problems from worsening and leading to emotional disturbances and deviant behavior. Today, peer counseling programs are gaining more ground in Greek schools and universities.

The book aims to inform educators at all levels about the philosophy underlying such activities, the issues that peers can handle among themselves, the benefits for all involved members, and the ways in which educators can create and oversee such efforts in their classrooms.

This collective volume captures the results of the twenty-year contribution of the members of the Peer Counseling Center (SYKEOM) of the Department of Education and Care in Early Childhood (TEAP) of the University of Athens to their peers, while simultaneously paving the way for further applications of peer support to other populations and contexts, through the activities of the recently established Greek Scientific Society for Peer Counseling (ESYOM).
