The votive objects of the Minoans mostly consisted of sacred stones, trees, and columns. There is a wide variety of sacred trees, e.g., the plane tree, cypress, palm, vine, and fig tree.
The tree could be transformed into a column while retaining the sanctity of the original, and birds play an important role in the worship of these sacred trees and columns. The wooden columns derived their sacredness from the sacred tree from which they were made, as well as from the symbols engraved on them.
