Description & Specifications

The fascinating narrative of the rapid air power of the U.S. Navy—and how the Central Pacific campaign of 1944 marked the achievement of American naval superiority.

Task Force 58 was the most powerful battle fleet of World War II. Comprised in mid-1944 of sixteen aircraft carriers, over a thousand fighter planes, and an armada of escorts, it was vital to the victory against Japan.

In this thrilling account, Evan Mosley recounts the 3,500-mile journey of the "Blue Fleet" through the Central Pacific during the first six months of 1944, crushing enemy resistance and transforming the nature of naval warfare. The Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944 destroyed the enemy's naval air force and secured key air bases in the Marianas Islands.

Mosley examines the elements of the fast-formed force—warships, aircraft, and 100,000 officers and men—as well as the advanced bases and support fleet that provided this astonishing mobility.

The campaign of Task Force 58 marked the achievement of naval superiority by the United States, a status it maintains to this day.
