I would call the themes that run through these comic strips political-social pornography, as they concern the ballot box politicians and their parasites: communicators, advertisers, image makers, journalists (with exceptions, of course), professional bullsh*tters in general, but also the corrupt elite, who control them like puppets on the stage or better yet as “opponents” on the chessboard, against the numbed populace.
The media also plays a dominant role, with its clown protagonists, corresponding to social media today. I can't decide which of the two is worse.
Of course, you can't leave out eroticism, flirtation (yes, it used to exist), and sex from the equation, as this was a central theme at that time, in its vulgar form (from a commercial point of view), but also because it is one of my favorite subjects, as it strips down human relationships to the essentials and conventions.
Some other themes that parade across are urban prejudices, war, the violence of metropolises, drugs, Europe, the existential dead ends of young people, the search for meaning in the modern world, the hypocrisy of moralists and fake environmentalists, the impending technological conquests-dependencies, the toxic relationships of couples, the endless partying of a people who, through their choices, were preparing their dystopian future, and more.
It was 30 years ago, and it was moments from our future. Welcome to our wonderful new world. Only it's yesterday's!
