The information below will show you how to go up and down the stairs easily and safely using the cane.
Going up stairs:
- Hold on to the stair railing.
- Carry the cane with the opposite hand.
- Start with the stronger leg. Take the first step.
- Continue, making the next step with the weaker leg carefully and slowly.
- Caution: Do not rush and do not go up two steps at a time.
- If the stairs do not have a railing, perform the previous procedure carefully, but at a slower pace to avoid any injuries.
Going down stairs:
- First, make sure the surface is not slippery.
- Ensure that there are no obstacles in front of you.
- The first time going down the stairs might be difficult, so ask for help from your caregiver.
- Hold on to the railing (if there is none, ensure that you are stable enough and well-balanced).
- Lower the cane along with your weaker leg and take a slow first step.
- Then lower the other foot and step onto the same step.
- Caution: Do not rush and do not go down two steps at a time.
- Repeat until you reach the end of the stairs.
