The following information will show you how to climb and descend stairs easily and safely using the cane:

• Climbing stairs: Hold on to the handrail of the stairs. Use the opposite hand to carry the cane. Start with the stronger leg and take the first step. Continue by taking the next step with the weaker leg carefully and slowly. Note: do not rush and do not climb two steps at once. If the stairs do not have a handrail, perform the previous procedure carefully, but at a slower speed to avoid any injuries.
• Descending stairs: First, make sure the surface is not slippery. Ensure there is no obstacle in front of you. The first time descending the stairs may be difficult, so ask for help from your caregiver. Hold on to the handrail (if there is none, make sure you are stable enough and well-balanced). Lower the cane, along with your weaker leg, and take a slow first step. Then lower the other leg and proceed to the same step. Note: do not rush and do not descend two steps at once. Repeat until you reach the end of the stairs.
