Description

An exceptionally illustrated presentation of the international landscape of comics over the last sixty years. Published to accompany a major exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, Paris in May 2024, this edition revisits the international landscape of comics from the past six decades. Since the mid-1960s, the world of comics has rapidly evolved into a highly creative art form for a demanding audience: in France, the magazine Hara-Kiri offered new grounds for graphic humor, while the adventures of Barbarella by Jean-Claude Forest were published in albums by Éric Losfeld. The launch of Garo in 1964 in Japan, an avant-garde monthly magazine, introduced the concept of auteur comics, and the release of Robert Crumb's Zap Comix in 1968 established his reputation as a leader of the underground comics movement in the United States.

For the first time, this significant historical overview of the ninth art establishes a dialogue among the three main areas of comics culture – Europe, Asia, and America – and offers an immersive odyssey of the medium through its development over six decades, from the explosion of 20th-century counter-culture to the most abstract contemporary styles. Built around twelve themes encompassing the many worlds of comic fantasy, Comics: 1964–2024 features artists such as André Franquin, Gotlib, Claire Bretécher, Osamu Tezuka, Moebius, Edmond Baudoin, Alison Bechdel, Ulli Lust, Art Spiegelman, Marjane Satrapi, and Chris Ware, along with introductions for each theme by leading art specialists, a brand new interview with distinguished cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco, and a foreword note by Paul Gravett.
