Description

Why can't Israel accept Palestine and its people as equals, as companions on the path to peace? What does the war in Gaza mean for the future of both countries? Since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the Nakba (the "catastrophe," as the Palestinians call it) has seen numerous attempts to establish peace and equality between Palestine and Israel – after the six-day war in 1967, the Oslo Accords, and even after the war that began on October 7, 2023.

However, every effort has been undermined by Israel, which is why the situation in the West Bank is unbearable and the genocide in Gaza continues. In this book, Palestinian Raja Shehadeh, a lawyer and human rights activist, presents his personal testimony for understanding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while exploring what went wrong and why, as well as how things could be different.

While man can be swayed by prejudices by nature, in the case of Palestine and Israel, as the award-winning author firmly argues, the two nations can coexist based on mutual interest.

With the establishment of Israel, Palestine ceased to exist. To this day, Israel refuses to recognize Palestinians as a nation with the right to self-determination. This situation has worsened with the outbreak of war in Gaza, as during military operations against Hamas, the Israeli army killed tens of thousands of civilians, destroyed homes, and flattened Palestinian universities, museums, and historical monuments in order to eliminate the Palestinian presence.

WHAT THE PRESSWROTE
One of the greatest writers of Palestine. The Observer
With his moral clarity, the unearthing of his heart […] and his insistence on prioritizing the historical experience against the onslaught of nationalistic myth, Shehadeh reminds us of writers like Ghassan Kanafani and Primo Levi. The New York Times Book Review
Shehadeh's writing is clear and restrained... But the masterful and bold selection of the historical details and the data he uses builds an unassailable case against the oppressors of Palestine. The Guardian
Shehadeh offers a lifeline in the midst of a dark sea. Rachel Kushner, author

The most outrageous aspect of this new story is that, before the "return" of the exiled Jews, there was a land where no people lived. The Palestinians who happened to reside there arrived only when the first Zionist colonization began, because it created economic opportunities for them. In the same narrative, the land remained fallow, a barren desert waiting for 2,000 years for its true owners, the Jews, to return and inhabit it again. It is no coincidence that this is the narrative of every colonizer in history. As ridiculous as they sound, the above were widely spread at the time and continue to be propagated. Even stranger is that they are accepted by the majority of global public opinion. There is no Jewish term that conveys the great catastrophe caused by the Israeli establishment, which Palestinians describe with the word Nakba.
