Type IIA submarines were small vessels that operated in coastal waters. Only 6 of them were produced (U1-U6), all were launched from the Deutsche Werft slipway in Kiel. The initial design was created in 1933-34. An interesting fact was that the turrets of certain ships were painted white when flying the "Kaiser" flag before 1936.
