From her early photographs in the late 1970s, Bettina Rheims has challenged the predictable. From her series on the Pigalle strippers (1980) to her cycle on the life of Jesus in I.N.R.I. (1998), from her Chanel ads to the Gender Studies (2011), her work has shaken traditional codes of representation and continuously pressed the tipping point between two major human challenges: beauty and imperfection. This retrospective exhibition of Rheims presents more than 300 photographs from 35 years of bold, often provocative photography. Personally selected and assembled by Rheims, the collection gathers well-known series such as Chambre Close, Héroïnes, and Rose, c’est Paris. Between commercial work and artistic series, the retrospective impresses with every turn of the page, both for the force of each image and for the captivating variety of Rheims’ subjects and aesthetics. With equal attention to anonymous people on the streets as well as international celebrities like Kate Moss, Madonna, Monica Bellucci, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell, the book highlights Rheims’ distinctive interest in female fragility and strength, as well as the magical encounter between model and artist, which disrupts the codes of the so-called eroticism to build a new image system for female existence.
