Description

“Dear God, the Parthenon is still broken” is a photographic vignette by Yorgos Lanthimos. Although it was created on the set of the film “Poor Things” in Budapest, the book resides in a distinct world, independent of time and place. The photographs alternate between black and white and color, giving the impression of a waking dream between past and present, while many layers between reality and fiction are revealed gradually. The film is set in various locations of the late 19th century, including London, Lisbon, Marseille, and a cruise ship—all recreated in Budapest. These constructed cities and interiors provide the backdrop for the photographs. The characters populate these fantastical cities, while the precarious screens, scaffolding, tailors, lighting, and crew reveal themselves at the periphery of the images. Lanthimos has deliberately widened the frame to show the function of construction, shaping a new story within the story.
