In his work “On the Spiritual in Art,” Wassily Kandinsky, one of the first and most famous abstract painters, countered the idea of “art for art’s sake.” By exploring form and color, spirituality and tradition, Kandinsky envisioned a future for painting with its ability to redirect viewers’ attention from the shallow materialism of the modern world to the deeper spiritual and emotional concerns of their inner lives.
