Rome, from the beginning.
Titus Livius, the great Roman historian, was born in Patavium (Padua) in 64 or 59 BC and died in Rome in AD 12 or 17. Livy's history, written as the imperial authority of Augustus replaced the republican system that existed for over five hundred years, provides a vivid narrative of Rome's rise from the traditional founding of the city in 753 or 751 BC to 9 BC and depicts the collective and individual virtues necessary to achieve and maintain this grandeur.
Of his 142 books, usually divided into pentads and decades, we have complete books 1–10 and 21–45, as well as brief summaries (periochae) of all the rest except 41 and 43–45. Books 11–20 have been lost, while only fragments and summaries remain of the others. The fourth decade includes two recognizable pentads: Books 31–35 recount the Second Macedonian War (200–196) and its aftermath (Rome's increasing hegemony over Greece and tension with Antiochus III, the Seleucid ruler of the Near East), while Books 36–40 cover the years from 191 to 180, when Rome demolished and curtailed Antiochus' empire to expand and consolidate its dominion over the Hellenistic states. Detailed narratives of Rome's domestic politics and society, as well as its Western wars, are also included.
This edition of the fourth decade, replacing the original Loeb edition by Evan T. Sage, offers a text based on the Briscoe edition, a new translation, and abundant annotation that is fully updated with contemporary scholarship.
