Pink Floyd were not a pop band. That was the Beatles. Alas, Pink Floyd were not even a rock band. That was the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin. Pink Floyd taught us to listen to music. Or, to put it better, they taught us to appreciate not so much the music per se, but the intervals and pauses between the seven notes. This is probably their most significant contribution to world music - along with the first purely heavy metal song in rock history, the "Nile Song" of 1969, as well as the "invention" of quiet/loud orchestrations and the term post rock, twenty (and more) years before it became widely known initially by Slint and later by Godspeed!
