Description

An extensive retrospective exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris demonstrates why the visionary artist continues to attract attention.

This illustrated catalog is published to accompany the retrospective exhibition dedicated to the American artist Mark Rothko, curated by Suzanne Pagé and the artist's son, Christopher Rothko. The exhibition will include over one hundred works.

Born as Markus Rothkowitz in Latvia at the beginning of the 20th century, the man who would soon become known as Mark Rothko began painting in the 1930s. While his early works were influenced by mythology and surrealism, his early abstract paintings emerged in the 1940s with the Multiform series, followed by the Classical Years and the Black and Gray paintings. A central figure on the New York art scene, Rothko was an artist who could not be categorized and used an extensive palette of colors and light with a talent that continually evokes emotions. His unique sensitivity shaped a poetic, enigmatic universe that leaves no one unaffected.
