THE UNPUBLISHED NOVEL

Sitting alone beside the turquoise waters of the lagoon, Ana Magdalena Bach observes the men at the hotel bar. She has two children from a happy marriage of twenty-seven years, from which she has no reason to want to escape. Yet, every August, she travels by ferry to the island where her mother is buried, and for one night, she finds a new lover.

Amidst the sultry Caribbean nights, filled with salsa and bolero, Ana journeys deeper each year into the heart of her desires and fears.

Full of surprises and sentimentality, See You in August is a profound reflection on freedom, sorrow, personal transformation, and the mysteries of love; an unexpected gift from one of the greatest writers the world has ever known.

She returned to the island on Friday, August 16th, with the three o’clock ferry. She wore jeans, a checked shirt, simple low-heeled shoes without socks, a straw hat, her handbag, and, as her only luggage, a beach bag. At the taxi queue on the pier, she went straight to an old model, worn down by the salt. The driver greeted her with a friendly nod and they set off, constantly bumping into potholes as they passed through the native village with its wooden shacks, palm-leaf roofs, and roads of hot sand in front of a blazing sea. He had to swerve to avoid fearless pigs and naked boys who mocked him by pretending to be bullfighters. After passing through the village, they continued along an avenue lined with royal palms, where the beaches and tourist hotels were located, between the open sea and a closed lagoon full of blue herons. Finally, he stopped at the oldest and most neglected hotel.

The receptionist was waiting for her with the registration form ready for her signature and the keys to the only room on the second floor overlooking the lagoon. She climbed the stairs in four strides and entered the shabby room, filled with the strong smell of insecticide, almost entirely occupied by a double bed. She took a leather toiletry bag and an uncut book from her bag and placed them on the nightstand, with an ivory paper knife between the pages. She took out a pink silk nightgown, which she put under the pillow, a silk scarf printed with exotic birds, a white short-sleeved shirt, some very worn tennis shoes, and took them to the bathroom.

Although it is by a beloved author, I was not thrilled by this particular text; perhaps the plot surprised me. Nevertheless, it is worth reading as the swan song of one of the most important writers of our time

Not one of my favorite works by Márquez. It's a light, easy-to-read book especially for summer at the beach. But that's about it.
