The village of Charmalaia is very small, but it has many children. For them, Christmas is the most beautiful holiday, and they participate with all their hearts in the preparations. They make gingerbread cookies (hearts, stars, and especially pigs), haul wood with the sled (which is a bit boring), and bring trees from the forest to decorate them. They are eager on Christmas Eve (who would have thought?) when Santa Claus is supposed to come with gifts, and filled with joy on Christmas Day, when they sing, dance, eat treats, and play in the snow until the afternoon. Christmas is a big celebration for us in Charmalaia. Even the sparrows and robins are happy then because we put bundles of dried oats out for them to feast on. The grains are for the sparrows and other hungry birds. And for us, the children, Christmas is good, even better than for the birds. Let me tell you how last Christmas was. Three days before, we made gingerbread cookies. And we had almost as much fun as on Christmas Eve. The smell of gingerbread filled the whole village. Oh, how lovely Christmas is! I hope it comes a little more often!
