Petros is eight years old and goes to school. He has a teacher, a reader, a math book, two notebooks, and many pencils with which he writes and draws. He also has a five-year-old sister, Lena. "I want to go to school too!" Lena says every day, and often, in the room she shares with Petros, she plays school. What is it like to have a teacher? What wonderful stories are in those beautiful illustrated books? And what should you write in your notebooks? It would be easier for her to play school if she knew what school is really like. And, guess what, one day, Petros says to Lena, "Come with me and see what school is like." And how is it? The teacher is friendly, counting on the board or reading doesn't seem so difficult, during lunch the children eat pancakes (although Lena didn't come on the day fish is served at the cafeteria), and during recess, Lena plays with Petros and his classmates in the yard full of autumn leaves.

Astrid Lindgren (1907–2002) is the most famous Swedish children's author. Her childhood spent on her parents' farm, with her brother and two sisters, the love she was surrounded by, her childhood adventures and games were an endless source of inspiration for her stories and characters. Astrid Lindgren grew up among books and was a constant supporter of reading for children: "A childhood without books is not childhood at all. It’s like being exiled from the magical place where you can find pure joy." Her books have been translated into dozens of languages and have inspired many adaptations. After the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, Astrid Lindgren is the most translated children's author.

Ilon Wikland (born 1930) is an Estonian illustrator who became a refugee in Sweden in 1944. In 1953, she was hired by the publishing company Rabén & Sjögren, where she met Astrid Lindgren, and together they started a long and productive collaboration. Among all the artists she worked with, Ilon Wikland is the one who has illustrated the most of her books.
