Grandpa's Soup
Age Group: 2-7 years
Dimensions: 20 x 25 cm
Hardcover: 32 pages
Plini, pleio, baldampak! A grandfather lives alone after losing his wife and remembers the delicious meatball soup she used to make. How good it was, how much he wishes he could taste that soup again! Can he make it himself? What was the recipe? Meat, potatoes... The small pot should be enough for one person. But what would happen if someone else appeared?
With a simple and well-structured plot, the grandfather's story becomes an excellent example of how we can approach serious topics with children: using simple, everyday words, without unnecessary and complicated sentences, and above all without "preaching" and overly "surface-level" explanations of the message.
Japanese author Eiko Kanto provides us not only with an emotional story but also with a method for overcoming sadness, step by step, reminding us of our loved ones through the simple, everyday things we enjoyed together. And because, without hesitation, the grandfather shares his soup with unexpected and steadily increasing guests, our story helps us understand how important friendship, empathy, openness, and the desire to be with others are.
After his grandmother's death, the grandfather was left alone. He felt very sad and too weak to do anything. Every day was the same: after the milk delivered by the milkman and the bread bought from the bakery, he would sit in his armchair and remain still, looking into the void. Days went by one after the other, with nothing happening.
One day, after waking up, the grandfather whispered to himself: "I wish I could eat a hot soup! I would give anything to be able to eat again the meatball soup that my beloved wife used to make!" On the kitchen shelf, five pots were neatly arranged. "Maybe I should try to make the meatball soup myself; I am alone, so this small pot will be perfect," thought the grandfather and took the smallest pot from the shelf.
"When she made meatball soup, my wife would sing," he remembered. When the water boils, immediately put in the meatballs. Plini, pleio, baldampak! Add the peeled potatoes to the water, and don't worry, they'll fit in the pot. Plini, pleio, baldampak! Without onions, no soup turns out right, add two or three carefully selected ones to the pot. Plini, pleio, baldampak! Cut the carrots into slices — it's hard work for great taste — and add them to the pot. Plini, pleio, baldampak! Cook everything gently, and you're done when you add salt, pepper, and butter at the end.
