Encourage a lasting love for science and nature with these experiments in physics, chemistry, and biology for children! In the book Outdoor Science Lab for Kids, scientist and mother Liz Heinecke presents 52 lab activities designed to get kids outside in every season. From playground physics to backyard bugs, this book makes the process of discovering the natural sciences fun and easy.

Following clear, illustrated, step-by-step instructions, you'll have fun learning about:

• the laws of physics by building and using a marshmallow catapult.
• centripetal force by spinning a sock filled with jelly and marbles.
• earthworms using dissolved mustard seed to bring them to the surface.
• vegetation by planting a tree from a pine cone or tree seed.
• surface tension and capillary action by growing stalagmites and stalactites from baking soda.

Along with the experiments, you will find:

• Tips for keeping a scientific journal.
• Suggestions for upgrading your experiments with “Creative Enrichment.”
• Accessible explanations for “The Science Behind the Fun.”
• Safety tips and hints.

The experiments can be used as part of homeschooling, for family fun, at parties, or as educational activities for groups. Many of the simple and affordable experiments are safe even for toddlers, yet exciting enough for older kids, allowing families to discover the joy of science and STEM education together.

Outdoor Science Lab for Kids was a finalist for the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books. The popular Lab for Kids series includes an expanding list of books offering activities and projects on a wide variety of subjects, such as art, astronomy, clay, geology, and math, all written by established experts in their fields.

Each lab contains a complete list of materials, clear photos of the process, as well as examples of completed projects. The activities are designed to be repeatable and often yield different results.
