Description & Specifications

This unit is a 16-bit 4-channel ADC converter based on the ADS1115 chip. You would rarely want a resolution higher than 16-bit, making this unit a perfect choice for an external ADC. It is the ADS1115 16-Bit ADC - 4 channels with a programmable gain amplifier. For microcontrollers without an analog-to-digital converter or when you want a higher precision ADC, the ADS1115 provides 16-bit precision at 860 samples/second via I2C. The chip can be configured as 4 single-ended input channels or two differential channels. As a nice bonus, it even includes a programmable gain amplifier, up to x16, to help boost smaller single/differential signals to the full range. We like this ADC because it can operate from 2V to 5V power/logic, can measure a wide range of signals, and is extremely easy to use. It is an excellent general-purpose 16-bit converter. The ADS1115 performs conversions at data rates up to 860 samples per second (SPS). The PGA offers an input range from ±256 mV to ±6.144 V, allowing accurate measurements of large and small signals. The converter features an input multiplexer that allows for two differential or four single-ended input measurements. Use the digital comparator on the ADS1115 for under- and over-voltage detection. The ADS1115 operates in either continuous conversion mode or single-shot mode. The devices automatically power down after a conversion in single-shot mode, thus significantly reducing power consumption during idle periods. To get started, for the Raspberry Pi (use the Adafruit Pi Python library) and the Arduino (use the ADS1X15 Arduino library). Simply connect the GND to ground, the VDD to your logic power supply, and the SCL/SDA to your microcontroller's I2C port and run the example code to start reading data.
