Description

Five years after A Normal Life, Vasilis Palaiokostas returns with a book that talks about his childhood and teenage years – years that marked him and shaped his character. The romance that permeated the tumultuous world of A Normal Life is here in its natural environment, in the place where he was born. The locations described as nostalgia, but also as battlefields, escapes, and survival, come to the forefront, illuminated by the light of another era. Vasilis Palaiokostas reminisces, wanders, and describes the mountains, meadows, rivers, shepherds' huts, the villages of the Greek countryside, and their people through the eyes and rhythm of a child. The plan had been meticulously crafted, down to the last detail. Covered with the heavy blankets and pretending to be asleep, we lay in wait until our parents fell asleep. With the same anxiety that comes from trying to disarm an explosive device, we slowly pulled the latch of the lock and, turning the knob carefully, opened it. As we slipped out, we carefully closed it behind us and disappeared into the deep darkness. [...] "Whoever kills a pheasant goes to jail!" This threat hung over the heads of the villagers. With the anger of injustice boiling within us, we made the big decision. To strike at the heart of the problem by conducting a raid on the breeding ground! The plan we were tasked with carrying out was simple: To take as many pheasants as our bags could carry and to release the rest, to quell the resentment of injustice!

Amazing book, it takes you to another era. Having traveled to its places, I saw as ghosts the author himself, Mr. Leonidas, Giorgitsa, Pantelis, and every character, like ghosts through his vivid descriptions.

Although I would have liked more action, I liked it a lot! (My friend Palaiokostas, if you are reading the comments, we can meet at Chrysomilia so I can give you a more detailed opinion.)

A book that provokes thoughts. Economic on one hand and social on the other. Also, the transition to rural life and the nomadic lifestyle of the '70s and '80s is portrayed in such a way that you feel like you experienced it personally. For fans of the author's first book, do not expect a special reference to the years of the author's activity. It is highly recommended without reservation.

I understand that in order for a book to be sold at an affordable price, the quality must be compromised in some way. That's exactly what we have here. Small font and newspaper-like paper quality. No comparison to the first book published by the same publishing house. I hope that in its re-release, these details, for me, will be corrected. I won't comment on the content. That will be judged by each reader.
