The new edition of the book includes several changes. Biomechanics, a significant foundation upon which kinesiology is built, is presented earlier in the text. In this way, the principles of biomechanics are introduced and can be applied by students as they encounter concepts of the human body and its movements.
The emphasis on the principles of biomechanics and kinesiology in relation to human function has been broadened. The order of presentation of body areas and joints has changed, with the axial skeleton being mentioned before the extremity skeleton. Specific content describing the anatomy of the human body has been reorganized to be covered in chapters that pertain to that specific anatomical position.
The purpose of this reorganization is to present areas and joints of the human body in a technical manner related to gross anatomy. To assist students, references to content from previous chapters have been introduced to avoid repetition and to place the responsibility for understanding the material presented earlier on the reader themselves, so that they can apply this information later in the book.
The Clinical Application sections in each chapter remain. Their purpose is to connect foundational knowledge with clinical practice. The use of excellent images and tables for the illustration and visual presentation of the content is maintained, while some new tables have been added to help students organize the material.
ECG tables have also been preserved in the chapters regarding each "joint." An ECG table summarizes information concerning a specific muscle. These quick reference tables include the origin, insertion, action, and innervation of each muscle. Additionally, two types of images and two tables related to the anatomy and function of muscles have been retained. One image depicts each muscle separately, while the other illustrates the relationship of the muscles in a particular area.
One table summarizes the muscles and their movements, while the other summarizes the muscles and their innervation. In each "joint" chapter of the extremities, three additional tables have been added. The first type of table that has been added is the Range of Motion of the movements of the bones. The second table added, the Movements of the Bones and Articular Surfaces, provides the relationship of the movements of the bones and the associated movements of the articular surfaces of each joint of the extremities.
The third table, Classification of the Articular System and Arthrokinematic Characteristics, presents information about the tight and loose position, the end feel, and the capsular pattern of each joint of the extremities.
