Four women have gathered at the home of one of them to celebrate her birthday. The celebrant has an unexpected gift for them: she has bought each of them a vibrator, the "smart" Xerxes model.
The work deals with themes such as friendship, female sexuality in mature age, loneliness, and decay. "It is a character comedy with bittersweet tones," the author notes. "Their lives swirl, sometimes harmoniously, sometimes anxiously, around a commonplace daily life, work, family, or interests; their problems and anxieties are familiar to us, and the men, however important a role they play, provide a side narrative, different in each of them," mentions Katerina Theodoratou in the Afterword of the edition.
Each of the women carries a past with unfulfilled dreams and joys that have become memories, yet they remain alive and ready for the longed-for change, for a new adventure, for a dream that will illuminate their present and future. The male character with the pompous name Alcibiades Gemistos, the seller of Xerxes, is a lonely man, completely different from the image the company has dictated for him to sell to the clients. His encounter with the women will irrevocably change his own life.
According to Thanasis Triaridis, it is “an excellent work that, behind its cheerful theme and tempo, speaks of the (alas) eternal anxiety of human loneliness.”
