The purpose of the book is the critical analysis of the reasons and policies of school self-evaluation, as they were institutionally expressed in the Greek educational context during three distinct and successive governmental periods - "reform episodes" - (PASOK/ND-PASOK-DIMAR (2010-2015), SYRIZA-ANEL (2015-2019), ND (2019-2023).
The study explores the genealogy, in Foucauldian terms, of the institutional discourses and policies of school self-evaluation through a historical-comparative examination of the legislative texts (laws, ministerial decisions, circulars, implementation guidelines) published by the State during this period. The study is methodologically based on Critical Discourse Analysis (N. Fairclough/R. Wodak) and utilizes Discourse Theory (E. Laclau & Ch. Mouffe).
It emphasizes concepts such as hegemony, deconstruction, the contingent nature of policies, and the power-knowledge relationships that characterize the educational reform discourse, the policies, and the practices related to school self-evaluation at the national level during the studied period.
A key theoretical-interpretive assumption of the study is the analysis of school self-evaluation as a means of governing the school, as a school policy of learning, and as a mechanism for constructing and shaping a new individual and collective educational subject with the aim of continuously improving the educational work.
School self-evaluation represents a "paradigm shift" in school education as it connects and interacts with terms and concepts such as quality and effectiveness in education and school improvement, with the discourse on new competencies/qualifications of educators, and with the professional development of educators.
Specifically, it investigates school self-evaluation as a discursive and social practice that shapes a new individual and collective organizational consciousness, transforms traditional educational practices, and creates new open environments for learning, evaluation, and social accountability.
