Description

The first part features key sculptural representations from the Metopes and Pediments of the Parthenon, mainly the "exiled" ones (British Museum, Louvre, Copenhagen) as well as design representations of the temple and the monuments.

The second part presents very rare engravings, drawings, prints, and paintings of the monuments by European and American travelers (J.P. Babin – G. Taylor – W. Finden – A. Tardieu – J. Stuart-N. Revett – A. Paccard – J. Skene – C. Hansen – L.S. Fauvel – E. Dodwell – W.H. Barlett – J. Cousen – C. Henry) created from 1674 to the 20th century. Many of the illustrations are found in various museums and private collections and are depicted for the first time in a widely circulated publication.

In the third part, the monuments are showcased through the photographic lens with unique captures from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century.

Dr. Athanasios (Thanos) G. Papathanassopoulos (Athens 1953) studied Architecture in Paris (1972-1977). From 1980-1983, the Committee for the Conservation of Acropolis Monuments assigned him the documentation of a section of the North Wall of the Acropolis. From 1984-1990, as a regular member of the Committee for the Conservation of the Theatre of Dionysus, he was responsible for the working group on ongoing projects. He organized and supervised the cleaning of the South Slope area of the Acropolis, specifically the Theatre of Dionysus. He is an honorary director of the Department of Studies of Monuments from Prehistoric Times at the Directorate for the Restoration of Ancient Monuments of the Ministry of Culture.
