Description

The Greeks of the Caucasus are the absolute "orphans" who have never known maternal affection. It is characteristic that local newspapers began to mention Tskhaltubo when the residents of Tbilisi were impressed by its waters, while they mentioned the Greeks of the area only when they started dying in front of everyone. In the almost 100 years of their existence in the territories of the Caucasus, no one spoke supportively of them. On the contrary, they were threatened by all who believed they were the masters of the area. Meanwhile, the Greek people drew the attention of neighboring nations for their industriousness and their tendency for peaceful coexistence.

For us and for history, it is significant that this harsh, though hospitable region, over the course of 180 years became home to hundreds of Greek immigrant families from Anatolia. It should be noted that the Rums (Rumlar) of Anatolia in this part of the Caucasus managed to build and establish not only the ruins of dozens of Georgian Orthodox churches but also, through their noble and honorable way of life, began to cultivate this area.

This people combined the strictness of customs and traditions with the gentleness of the soul and a good disposition towards the nations that surrounded them. Thanks to their good-natured character, this people managed to transform Tskhaltubo into their own Greece over the course of approximately 200 years, where humanity, dedication to their historical homeland, and faith in their religion prevailed. Ultimately, not only their friends but also their enemies were forced to recognize their stability, determination, industriousness, and patriotism.
