Once I noticed that although I turned off the switch and poured out the water, when I put it back on the base it started to smell like something was burning and I realized that when I turned off the switch it didn't click and got stuck, so it kept heating without water. Later it clicked by itself when I fiddled with it and it has been working normally since then, but now I keep an eye on it.
