Purpose of the Underlayment
Unlike solid wood floors, laminate floors are very thin and installed floating without being glued or nailed anywhere. Underlayment is essential beneath the laminate floor and offers stability, as well as some additional properties such as sound absorption, thermal insulation, or moisture protection depending on its quality and category.
Without underlayment, the space will echo, the floor will not be stable enough and noise will be transmitted more easily. Its properties remain stable over time, it does not promote the growth of fungi and bacteria and does not irritate the respiratory system.
The main purpose of underlayment is to provide a smooth, flat surface, reducing imperfections in the subfloor.
- Smoothes out minor floor imperfections.
- Stability to the floor.
- Thermal insulation (depending on its category).
- Soundproofing (depending on its category).
- Acts as a vapor barrier.
- Makes walking easier.
