Description

In the present work, the political handling of the Cyprus issue by the Greek Governments is analyzed for the first time:

  • How it changed from a Greek-British to a Greek-Turkish dispute (1954-1955)
  • The contribution of the EOKA Struggle and how we transitioned from Union to Independence and from there to a Greek-Turkish co-sovereignty (1956-1959)
  • How we reached the Turkish mutiny and how co-sovereignty turned into de facto partition (1963-1964)
  • What was the background of the Acheson plans and unilateral Union (1964-1965), the Paris Protocol (1966), and the Kessani-Alexandroupolis Talks (1967)
  • How the National Guard was formed and what is the truth about the mission of ELDYK/M (1964), the Kofinou operation (November 1967), and its recall
  • What strategy was implemented from 1968, what the inter-Cypriot talks aimed for and achieved (1968-71 and 1972-74)
  • What is the connection between the Panagoulis attempt and Cyprus (1968) and who carried out the attempt against Makarios and the assassination of P. Georgadjis (1970)
  • The relations between Papadopoulos-Makarios-Grivas and what was the background of the crises of June 1971 and February 1972 and Grivas's return to Cyprus
  • What is the truth about EOKA B, the issue of Cypriot Metropolitans, the APOLLO and SFENDONI plans, etc.
  • Why the period 1972-1973 was the last chance for the Cyprus issue and what the Cyprus Defense Plan APHRODITE 73 foresaw
  • What was the background of the overthrow of Makarios (15.7.1974) and why Ioannidis aimed for joint exploitation of the Aegean in exchange for Union
  • How we reached ATTILA I, how the Plans were violated, and why the Turkish landing fleet was not attacked
  • What was the background of ATTILA II, how 4% turned into 38% occupation, and when Karamanlis and Makarios accepted the Bizonal Bicommunal Federation.

The work is based on exhaustive research of all sources. Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (I.A.Y.E.), the USA, Britain, the USSR, etc., classified documents, CIA reports (FOIA/F-2014-02691), and records.

Testimonies from interviews, official depositions, unpublished diaries, and recorded memories. All related literature by protagonists and historical researchers related to the Cyprus issue. Half a century after that tragic summer of 1974, the history of the Cyprus Issue is illuminated, and it becomes clear how we reached the occupation of 38% of Cyprus.
