The Red Hood was a mysterious criminal hidden under a red hood, who fell into a pit of toxic waste while trying to escape from a chemical plant. The toxins permanently disfigured him, turning his hair green, his skin white, and his lips red. His crazed appearance disturbed him so much that he eventually began to refer to himself as "the Joker."
