The actress and director Maria Osipovna Knebels (1898-1985) was one of the most influential figures of Soviet theater in the twentieth century. Throughout her life, she was consistently engaged in theater teaching, and among her students are the leading directors Anatoly Vasiliev, Adolf Shapiro, and Leonid Heifetz.
She had the fortune to study under great teachers, but crucial for her artistic development was her time with Konstantin Stanislavski, the creator of the world's first cohesive system for actor training. Next to Stanislavski, she had the opportunity to delve into and understand his system in practice, within a framework of creative exploration and experimentation.
Knebels introduced the groundbreaking method of active analysis of the play and role in the rehearsal process, freeing actors from the restrictive framework of table analysis. In particular, she emphasized the use of intuition and the cultivation of trust in the individual qualities of interpreters as key pillars in approaching a role.
On Active Analysis of the Play and Role is a reference book that precisely illuminates the Stanislavski system. First published in Russian in 1959, it continues to be an essential manual for students and professionals in theater around the world.
Drawing material from her notes, lessons, and discussions with Stanislavski, Knebels manages to delve into his work in an admirable way, summarizing it, highlighting its key points, and evolving it into a valuable guide for the process of analyzing theatrical texts, guiding actors, as well as structuring the very act of performance.
