Description & Specifications

The art of working with Damascus steel has a rich history spanning thousands of years. In this technique, the surface of objects made of steel or iron is decorated with an engraved design, followed by the application of a thin sheet of gold which is embedded using a hammer. Heating the object to approximately 800° C oxidizes the steel surfaces, while the gold begins to shine.

This technique, which developed especially in the city of Toledo, Spain, was adopted in 1931 by Pelikan for the Toledo model, and has remained essentially unchanged since then. The decorative casing is made from a piece of sterling silver, carefully worked through various stages until the pattern is covered with gold.
